Basketball is a year-round sport, with two main seasons – Summer and Winter. Each season consists of a number of rounds, with each team playing one game per round. Rounds are generally played during school terms, with U8s–U14s games on Saturdays and U16s–U21s during the week.
Each game is played over 2 x 18-minute halves, with teams changing direction at half-time.
Frankston Bobcats teams compete primarily in the Frankston & District Basketball Association (FDBA). We can also assist players and teams who wish to play in other associations, including Chelsea & District Basketball Association (CADBA). All games are played under the relevant association’s domestic competition rules.
At the beginning of each season, teams are placed into a grade. The grading hierarchy is generally:
A Grade – highest level
B
C
down to the lowest grade, D 2, 3 or 4 Grade
Each grade is further divided by gender and age, starting with:
U8s, U10s, U12s, U14s, U16s, U18s, U21s
The first 4-6 rounds of each season are grading rounds, used to ensure teams are playing at an appropriate competition level. Fixtures for grading rounds are released weekly, as team placements may change during this period.
Depending on the season and school/public holidays, there are normally 16-18 competition rounds per season, including grading rounds.
Teams finishing in the top 4 ladder positions at the end of the competition rounds qualify for finals.
Teams that do not qualify finish their season at the end of the last round.
U8s teams do not participate in finals. They play an additional round during the first week of finals and a Encouragement Round during the second week. All U8s participants in the Encouragement Round receive a participation award regardless of match results.
Finals are typically played over 2 rounds:

2nd vs 3rd on ladder
Winner of both goes directly to the Grand Final
